Helmut Beyer

Helmut Beyer (born October 18, 1925 , † January 24, 2011 in Mönchengladbach ) was a German sports official .

life and work

Helmut Beyer was the son of a textile manufacturer, went to school in Mönchengladbach and graduated from high school in 1944. From 1947 he studied economics in Bonn and became an active member of the Catholic student association KStV Vandalia in the KV . After graduating with a degree in economics, he did his doctorate in Bonn. rer. pol., with the subject of economic problems of cost accounting in the case of short-term shape changes in companies in the clothing industry. Beyer married Liesel Baumanns in 1954, and the marriage resulted in a son.

Beyer had been President of Borussia Mönchengladbach for over 30 years since April 25, 1962 . One of Beyer's principles was that the club's management should not spend more money than there was income. Together with manager Helmut Grashoff and team doctor Alfred Gerhards , he formed the legendary “triumvirate” of Borussia for decades. The controversial leave of absence of the club manager Rolf Rüssmann on July 8, 1992 was one of the reasons for Beyer's resignation as president on July 17, 1992. Beyer was then elected honorary president.

Borussia celebrated its greatest successes in the Beyer era. These include the five championship titles as well as winning the UEFA Cup in 1975 and 1979.

Former fitness trainer Karl-Heinz Drygalsky was chosen to be Beyer's successor on August 27, 1992 .

Until recently, Helmut Beyer was Chairman of the Honorary Council of Borussia Mönchengladbach.
