Peter Beyer (historian)

Peter Beyer (born January 29, 1938 in Netzschkau ) is a German historian and archivist .

Life

Peter Beyer grew up with four siblings in Netzschkau in the Saxon Vogtland . His father died in World War II. In Reichenbach he passed the Abitur. In 1956 he went to the Karl Marx University in Leipzig , where he studied history, German and historical auxiliary sciences. Heinrich Sproemberg , Walter Markow , Hellmut Kretzschmar and Karl Czok were among his teachers . The latter supervised the diploma thesis and later the dissertation of Peter Beyer.

Peter Beyer became interested in Vogtland local history and monument preservation at an early stage. He also got to know how to work with the sources in the archives and thus found a job in the Leipzig City Archives in 1961 after completing his degree . In 1964/65 he studied archival science as a correspondence course at the Humboldt University in Berlin in order to obtain a corresponding degree as a qualified archivist . From 1969 to 1970 he was director of the Leipzig City Archives. He did not join the SED or any of the bloc parties and therefore had no prospects in the Leipzig city administration; he also ultimately lost his post as deputy archives director. In 1977 he resigned and went to Berlin to the Institute for Economic History of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . There he worked a. a. participated in the publication of the first volume of the standard work on the history of the productive forces in Germany .

In 1985 he went to Mylau , where he took over the district museum at Mylau Castle and presented several publications on regional history. At the age of 60 he took early retirement. He remained active as a journalist, with the focus of his research being primarily on the history of the Göltzsch and Elstertal bridges.
