from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ralf-Eckhard Beyer (born December 13, 1951 in Dortmund ) is a German physicist, engineer and laser expert.

Life

After graduating as an engineer from the Wedel Engineering School in 1975, Eckhard Beyer worked for several years in industry. From 1978 to 1981 he completed a physics degree at the Technical University of Darmstadt , where he did his doctorate in engineering. Physics. From 1985 he worked at the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT in Aachen as head of the laser applications department, later as deputy / acting institute director. At the same time he was given a teaching position at the RWTH Aachen University , where he completed his habilitation in 1995.

In 1997 Beyer was appointed professor at the Technical University of Dresden and held the chair for laser and surface technology until September 30, 2018. In addition, he was director of the Institute for Manufacturing Technology from 2003 and dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering from 2010 to the end of 2012. From 1997 to 2018 he headed the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology in Dresden. Since October 1, 2018, Prof. Beyer has been a senior professor at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden.

He is a member of the Scientific Society for Laser Technology, the Board of Stakeholders of the European Technology Platform Photonics 21 and the Board of Directors of the Laser Institute of America . He is also the owner of 60 patents. Eckhard Beyer is one of the pioneers in the development of application possibilities for lasers and the transfer of these technologies to industrial production. His achievements include the development of the principle of the rotating hollow needle, which is used worldwide today to determine the properties of a laser beam. In 1994 he presented the first hybrid welding process for deep penetration welding .

He is also a founding member of the Dresden-based science alliance Dresden-concept and has been its branch manager since 2019.
