Hermann Beyer (doctor)

Hermann Beyer (born October 19, 1868 in Rastenburg , Masuria ; † October 4, 1955 in Gievenbeck ) was a German ENT doctor in Berlin and Münster.

Life

Beyer attended the Herzog-Albrechts-Schule (Rastenburg) . After graduating from high school, he began to study medicine at the University of Jena . In 1889 he was reciprocated in the Corps Thuringia Jena . When he was inactive , he switched to the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin , the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg and the University of Leipzig . In Leipzig he passed the state examination and doctoral examination in 1895. After several trips, he went to Felix Victor Birch-Hirschfeld's pathology department in Leipzig as an assistant . He actually wanted to become an ophthalmologist and switched to the physiology department at the Charité . Ludwig Katz (1848–1909) won him over for ear, nose and throat medicine .

He began his clinical career in the University Ear Clinic of the Charité with Carl Adolf Passow . Habilitated since 1911 , he headed the entire clinic during the First World War. In 1919 he received the title of professor. As a senior physician, he headed the polyclinic. When his boss and fatherly friend Passow died, Beyer gathered Passow's students every year. For decades, he led surgery courses for colleagues from home and abroad.

He was a librarian in the German Society of Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors . In his bibliophilia , the Springer Verlag made him head of the Zentralblatt from 1938 to 1945.

Beyer had been married since 1928. With his wife he kept a hospitable home, especially for artists. After her death he was evacuated to Uslar during the war with her daughter and son-in-law . He followed them to Munster . He took over "tapping courses" at the Münster University Hospital . After several strokes , his daughter and her husband cared for him until death.

In theoretical and clinical work he dealt with the sense of smell and auditory perception . His book The Operations on the Ear was world-famous . He had completed the 4th edition in old age (including an operation for otosclerosis ) and edited it himself. For Helmut Loebell , Beyer had "made a major contribution to the international reputation of German otology".
