HMS Achille
There were four ships in the Royal Navy named HMS Achille , named after the almost invulnerable hero of Greek mythology Achilles . The French spelling “celebrates” the takeover by the French.
- HMS Achille (1745) , a French 8-cannon sloop that was brought up during the War of the Austrian Succession .
- HMS Achille (1778) , a French liner of the third rank with 78 cannons, originally launched as Annibal , renamed Achille and captured during the naval battle on the 13th Prairial . In 1796 it was scrapped.
- HMS Achille (1780) , a military transport ship bought in 1780 and sold again in 1784.
- HMS Achille (1798) , a third rank ship of the line with 74 cannons, took part in the Battle of Trafalgar , broken up in 1865.
