HMS Belleisle

The name HMS Belleisle , after the French island of Belle-Île off the coast of Brittany, was borne by three ships of the British Royal Navy :

  • The first HMS Belleisle (1795) was originally the French Formidable , a third class ship of the line with 74 cannons, which was captured near Belle-Île in 1795. She was involved in the Battle of Trafalgar and was scrapped in 1814.
  • The second HMS Belleisle (1819) was also a third class ship of the line with 74 cannons, launched in 1819 and scrapped in 1872.
  • The third HMS Belleisle (1876) was an armored battleship originally built as the Peiki Shereef for the Turkish Navy, but acquired for the Royal Navy in 1876 and sunk as a target ship in 1903.
  • Furthermore, a destroyer named HMS Belleisle was launched in 1946 , but it was never completed.
