HMS Culloden

Five ships of the British Royal Navy were named HMS Culloden in memory of the Battle of Culloden , which took place in Scotland in 1746 .

  • The first HMS Culloden was renamed HMS Prince Henry before her maiden voyage in 1747 .
  • The second HMS Culloden also had its maiden voyage in 1747 and was sold in 1770.
  • The third HMS Culloden was a storage ship that had been in service since 1749 and was sold in 1765.
  • The fourth HMS Culloden was so badly damaged in the American Revolutionary War that it had to be decommissioned.
  • The fifth HMS Culloden took part in the naval battle at Abukir , in which the British fleet, under the command of Horatio Nelson, inflicted a devastating defeat on the French fleet. It did its service until 1813.
