HMS sandwich

Six ships in the Royal Navy were named HMS Sandwich ; a seventh construction was started but not completed.

The namesake was the port city of Sandwich , or a respective title holder of the title Earl of Sandwich , in particular Admiral Edward Montagu, 1st Earl of Sandwich , who died in 1672 at Solebay , less the unpopular First Lord of the Admiralty John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718– 1792).

  • HMS Sandwich (1679) , a 90-gun ship of the line . Served as the Hulk from 1752, dismantled in 1770
  • HMS Sandwich (1759) , a ship of the line with 98 cannons. In 1780 it was converted into a floating battery . Demolished in 1810
  • HMS Sandwich (1780) , acquired as a civil ship Majority , equipped with 24 cannons and renamed HMS Sandwich. In 1781 it was captured by the French.
  • HMS Sandwich (1804) , cutter acquired in 1804 , equipped with 10 cannons and sold in 1805
  • HMS Sandwich (1807) , acquired in 1805 as a 12-gun schooner HMS Pitt , renamed HMS Sandwich in 1807 and scrapped in 1809
  • HMS Sandwich (1809) , ship of the line designed with 74 cannons. Keel laid in 1809, construction demolished in 1811
  • HMS Sandwich (1928), a sloop with two 102mm cannons, sold for demolition in 1946
