The HTTP File Server (HFS) is a free, resource-saving web server for Microsoft Windows that was specially designed for offering downloads.

Functionality

The supported functions differ significantly from those of other web servers. HFS supports the HTTP / 1.1 protocol, but not FTP . Some standard functions such as CGI are missing, but rather unconventional functions are available - such as counting downloads. This underlines the actual purpose, namely to make an HTTP file server available to everyone. In addition, you can create user accounts and manage user-specific access to the respective files or folders, there is also an upload function that allows other users to upload files to the server via the browser, if the server owner wants it.

HFS also does its job properly using Wine under Unix-like operating systems, which makes it particularly interesting for "command line lazy" and less experienced users.

history

Development began in August 2002, version 1.0 was released in September of the same year.

The current stable version is version 2.3k (as of April 26, 2017).
