Haakon VII Land is an area in the northwest of Svalbard .

geography

Haakon-VII-Land is located in the northwest of the main island of Svalbard , further north is only Albert-I-Land . In the east lies Andrée-Land , in the south James-I-Land and Oscar-II-Land . The border in the west forms the line from Krossfjorden over Lilliehöökbreen to Raudfjorden. In the west the Woodfjorden cuts far south into the country, it forms the border to the Andrée-Land. The "triangle" between Haakon-VII-Land, Andrée-Land and James-I-Land is on the Holtedahlfonna. Correspondingly, the border of Haakon VII Land leads from there back west to the Kongsfjorden .

The center of Haakon VII Land is dominated by large glaciers, including the Isachsenfonna and the Monacobreen . The highest point is Eidsvollfjellet at 1,449 m . In the west, on the Kongsfjorden, many birds breed. In the northwest, on Liefdefjorden , there are many polar bears , the area is part of the Nordvest-Spitsbergen National Park .

etymology

Haakon VII Land is named in honor of Haakon VII (1872–1957), who was elected King of Norway in 1905 .
