In the coaching soap Hagen helps! Management consultant Stefan Hagen usually tries to bring a small business back on the road to success (typical examples are craft businesses such as bakeries or shoemakers). The program always runs according to the same scheme: In the style of the RTL format Get out of debt , a balance sheet is drawn up on the flipchart at the beginning of the program, which, in addition to the company's figures, also highlights the private financial situation. In later episodes, the flipchart was increasingly replaced by colorful pieces of paper on which Stefan Hagen presented the financial facts. With his last visit for the time being, the business coach draws a new balance towards the end of the program and checks whether he has been able to improve the situation with his suggestions.

Then the company or its owner receives some tasks that are supposed to make the company better known, which Stefan Hagen hopes to increase sales. Typical suggestions are the creation of new products (such as a new bread), "new customer acquisition", which mostly summarizes cooperation with other companies, local hotels or the distribution of flyers as well as the improvement of the website, and finally the organization of a larger event (day of open door, bread festival, fashion show, brewery festival, etc.). Hagen attaches great importance to the fact that his clients bring their own ideas and their special knowledge into the planning. Furthermore, the coach insists on convincing himself of the products of the company he is currently looking after. This is especially the case in gastronomy, where he likes to take the time to extensively review the culinary offer.

During the coaching, like Peter Zwegat , Hagen does not accompany him permanently in Get out of debt , but comes to visit at certain intervals to inquire about the state of affairs. Often the engagement of the management consultant in the program goes far beyond his actual competencies - for example, he sometimes also provides debt counseling and life counseling. So Stefan Hagen always has an open ear for the private problems of entrepreneurs and offers solutions in this area as well.

In some cases, Stefan Hagen also consulted experts. For example, the visual marketing expert Carsten Bolz was seen in some episodes; Various web designers were also used as a result.

The first season ended after eight episodes. After the second season, the third and, for the time being, last season of the format was broadcast.
