The Hagenholz Tunnel is a 2,999 meter long, double-lane railway tunnel in the canton of Zurich , in Switzerland . Together with the airport tunnel to the southwest, it forms the central element of the Zurich airport line ( Oerlikon - Bassersdorf ) of the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), which was opened in 1980 and runs largely underground .

The construction of the airport line including the airport train station was decided at the end of the 1960s and began in 1971 as part of the third construction phase (1970–1976) of Zurich Airport . The airport line finally opened on June 1, 1980, as the first of its kind in Switzerland, and took over the entire intercity traffic between Zurich and Winterthur . Although designed as a pure intercity route without intermediate stations, since the start of the Zurich S-Bahn in May 1990, S-Bahn trains have also been running on the route.

Building history

Due to the available space around the airport, construction on the west side was only possible through an intermediate attack. Due to the construction of multi-storey car park B, the space at the airport train station was too limited to accommodate an installation space for a tunnel construction site. On the east side, near the tunnel portal, not far from the Dorfnest junction, another installation site was set up. The tunnel was therefore divided into two lots, but three construction phases. All three sections were excavated except for the short section of the intermediate attack in the west and a short section of opencast mining in the east section. The east tunnel portal was constructed using opencast mining. The 65 meter long section of the tunnel served as an abutment for the tunnel boring machine. All three tunnel sections were excavated using shield driving, but not with a rotating tunnel boring machine, but using the supported partial cut method. A circular profile was excavated, which was supported with segments . The tunnel tube produced in this way has an outside diameter of 11.3 meters. The tunnel rises evenly from the airport to Dorfnest with 10.4 ‰.

In Los West , the 500 meter long section descending to the airport was first created, then the shield was dismantled and the ascending stretch was built. In Lot East , after the opencast tunnel had been built, the tunnel was excavated falling.
