Hagia Sophia (Thessaloniki)
Hagia Sophia ( Greek Αγία Σοφία Agia Sofia ) is a Church of Holy Wisdom in Thessaloniki in Greece . The three-aisled basilica was built in the 7th century on the foundations of a church from 315; it is considered a precursor of the cross-in-square . The dome has a diameter of 10 meters and the plan of the church is almost square. Inside there are mosaics from the 8th and 9th centuries.
history
The church was painted during the Byzantine iconoclasm . During the fourth crusade, the church became the city's cathedral. In 1359 Gregorios Palamas was buried in the church.
In 1523/1524 the building was converted into a mosque .
During the fire in Thessaloniki in 1917 , the building was mainly damaged on the inside, and extensive renovation was not carried out until 1980. Together with other early Christian and Byzantine monuments at the place the church in 1988 under the summary designation was Early Christian and Byzantine buildings in Thessaloniki to the UNESCO World Heritage declared.
