The Haifa Cable Car ( Hebrew רכבל חיפה) is a cable car in Haifa that leads from the Mediterranean beach Bat-Galim-Promenade to the viewpoint at the Stella Maris monastery on Mount Carmel .

history

Valley station on the beach

The cable car was built during the tenure of Mayor Aryeh Goral 1983–1986 by Doppelmayr in cooperation with the Technion Institute in Haifa , the six cabins for six people each were supplied by CWA Constructions from Olten (CH). Because of its appearance, it was nicknamed Gorals Eggs .

During the Lebanon War in 2006 , when missiles reached Haifa, the railway was shut down for safety reasons.

route

The valley station of the cable car is next to a parking lot between the coastal road to Tel Aviv and the beach. The mountain station is at the lookout point on Mount Carmel between the monastery and the Stella Maris lighthouse .

technology

The drive station is at the top, the tensioning station in the valley. Originally it was a monocable gondola and the gondolas had an audio system that offered explanations of the view while the trip was taking place. In the meantime the sound no longer works and the lift has been reconfigured into a single-cable group orbit with two groups of three cabins each.
