Haiku Funeral is a dark ambient band founded in 2008 .

history

Haiku Funeral were officially founded on Halloween 2008 in a recording studio in Marseille . The project was initiated by the Bulgarian Dimitar Dimitrov and the American William Kopecky. Both musicians were previously active in different music projects. Dimitrov mainly in black metal bands like Corpus Diavolis and Unhealthy Dreams , Kopecky, however, in groups of progressive rock like Far Corner and Kopecky . Kopecky explains the given founding date as the duo's first recording session. According to him, the project came about after he had moved to Marseille and offered himself bass to a band with which Dimitrov was active. After the first rehearsals together, both decided to create a project together instead of the band.

The first recordings were released in August 2009 under the title Assassination in the Hashish Cathedral on Hikikomori Records on CD-R . This was followed by two further releases on CD-R. The EP Hell 2010 via Witte Dood Records and the album If God Is a Drug in the same year again via Hikikomori Records. In October 2012, Aesthetic Death Records released the first professionally produced album Nightmare Painting . Nightmare Painting received mostly poor ratings in reviews of various metal webzines, and the album received high praise in isolated cases. Larger magazines did not discuss the publication. The on Nightmare Painting following Hallucinations was published in May 2016 again through Aesthetic Death. Drummer David Lillkvist was added to Haiku Funeral for the recordings. Hallucinations , like the previous album, was largely rated poorly, the album was only rated positively in isolated cases.

With Decadent Luminosity , another studio album was released via Aesthetic Death at the end of October 2018. Dimitrov took over the recording management and production of the album, which was created between 2012 and 2018. Greg Chandler from Esoteric mastered the recordings, which included Dimitrov and Kopecky, a wealth of guest musicians and singers. Contrary to the previous publications, Decadent Luminosity received more positive reviews.

style

Haiku Funeral's music is described as post-industrial , especially dark ambient, with influences from Death Doom and Black Metal . Kopecky describes the music as a fusion of dark psychedelic doom with experimental black metal. The music varies between “deep ambient ” and “groovy progressive industrial ”. The term Doom, which is often used on Haiku Funeral, denotes less an assignment to the music genre than an “ apocalyptic atmosphere” corresponding to the term and genre . The music played by Haiku Funeral is "not a really established style, but rather a soundtrack for the surreal and nightmarish poetry" of the group.

The label Aesthetic Death describes the music as "cold ambient industrial that meets experimental dark wave, is generously spiced with Death Doom and is driven by the pairing of pulsating virtuoso bass playing and hoarse growling to wildly crazy voices." Reviews mostly refer to one Mixing industrial, ambient and electronica referenced. The band play "dark and disturbing music that is combined with morbid poetry." "The narrative voice" varies in the publications. On Nightmare Painting the voice is "largely undistorted, often even in a whisper" on Hallucinations, on the other hand, "always distorted."
