Haitan ( 海壇島 / 海坛岛 , Hǎitán dǎo ) and Pingtan ( 平潭島 / 平潭岛 , Pingtan dǎo called), is a coastal island in the Chinese prefecture-level city Fuzhou and main island of the circle Pingtan . With an area of 324 km², Haitan is the largest island in Fujian Province and the fifth largest island in China. About 400,000 people live on the 29 km long and 19 km wide island.
A five kilometer long prestressed concrete bridge built in November 2010 connects the island with the mainland.
In 2009, Haitan was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its sights and pristine nature .
The island is especially popular with tourists because of its long sandy beaches and good surfing opportunities.
