The hook release is a device for releasing the fishhook from the fish's mouth .

For reasons of animal welfare, it is mandatory in Germany to carry a hook release when fishing. With the hook release, a thin rod with a notched end, the fish hook can be gripped, pushed against the direction of penetration and removed from the fish's mouth. For fish with sharp teeth, we recommend the use of hook release pliers, which are particularly used when fishing for pike or sea fish, as the hooks penetrate particularly deeply here. In addition, a "mouth lock" (picture on the right) is used for pike and pikeperch , because these fish have very sharp teeth and a strong jaw. Also, hemostats and needle holder (in the medical field) and are suitable to be used.

However, there are new developments in the field of hook looseners which only require a tool and promise to be able to loosen the hook without touching the fish; such as the so-called Larchy.
