Hook style

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In the old German verse theory, the incongruity of long line and syntactic units is called the hook style , in which the clauses often coincide with the end of the first half-verse, while the following abversive forms a syntactic unit with the anterior of the following line.

The term was coined by Eduard Sievers . When Andreas Heusler this form of entanglement is arch style called.

Hook style appears very often in Beowulf , Heliand and Hildebrandslied . An example from Heliand :

managoro mundboro. ' | Thô hêt ine mahtig Crist
gangan imu tegegnes. | He uuarð garu sâno,
stôp af themu stamne | endi strîdiun geng
forð te is frôian. | Thiu flôd anthabde

In modern poetry, the hook style is also used when enjambements appear in heaps in a poem .
