The Hakone Komagatake Cable Car ( Japanese 箱根 駒 ヶ 岳 ロ ー プ ウ ェ ー , Hakone Komagatake Rōpuwēi ; English Hakone Komagatake Ropeway ) is a cable car in Japan . It is located in the area of the city Hakone in Kanagawa Prefecture . It is operated by the Prince Hotels tourism company , which is part of the Seibu Group .

The 1356 m high Hakone Komagatake ( 箱根 駒 ヶ 岳 ) is one of the main cones of the Hakone volcanic massif and rises east of Lake Ashi , the crater lake in the western part of the caldera . Hakone-en ( 箱根 園 , also called Hakone Garden ), the valley station of the aerial cableway, is located on the east bank in the middle of the holiday home and hotel area of ​​the same name at an altitude of 736  m above sea  level.There are connections to several bus lines and to the excursion boats that operate on the lake . The cableway leads to the mountain station Komagatake-Chojo ( 駒ヶ岳頂上 ) to 1327 m  TP , far from the peak with the Hakone Mototsumiya shrine.

The system is an aerial tramway with two suspension and traction ropes in both directions. Over a length of 1783 m, it overcomes a height difference of 591 m. The two cabins each offer space for 101 people and move at a speed of 5 m / s. The greatest distance between two supports is 730 m, the greatest height above the ground is 43 m. The cable car is usually in operation between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. at 20-minute intervals, the journey time is seven minutes.

history

The cable car was opened on April 27, 1963 by the Izuhakone Tetsudō railway company . It was built jointly by the cable car construction companies Nippon Cable and Anzen Sakudo . In 1986 the system was modernized and in July 1990 automatic operation was introduced. From 2005 the Izuhakone Tetsudō and with it the cable car belonged to the Seibu Group . The cable car was transferred to Prince Hotels , which belong to the same group , on February 1, 2016 .

From 1957 to 2005, the Izuhakone Tetsudō also operated the Hakone-Komagatake funicular railway , which opened up the mountain from the east.
