The Halāl slaughterhouse in Neuss is a meat cutting company in Neuss . It is located in the Barbaraviertel at Büdericher Strasse 5. It is the largest slaughterhouse of its kind in Germany. There is no purely halal butcher shop of this size anywhere else in Germany. The operator is the native Iranian Amir Baharifar.

history

In 1830 the first slaughterhouse was opened in Brückstrasse in Neuss, followed by the second slaughterhouse in 1865 at the Hessentor. The slaughterhouse at Büdericher Straße 5 was built from 1903 and opened in 1905 as the city's third slaughterhouse, because private slaughterhouses had been forbidden by law since 1868.

A striking feature of the site is the former water tower, which is still part of the original structure of the complex and is now a monument. The architect was Walter Frese . In the mid-1980s, the municipal operation was transferred to Fleischversorgung Neuss GmbH . In 2004 the slaughterhouse was closed.

The property has an area of ​​18,000 m². In 2011, with the approval of the council, the leased property was sold to Fleischversorgung Neuss GmbH for EUR 500,000 .

Criticism from animal rights activists

The Human Environment and Animal Protection party announced protests and vigils against the slaughterhouse. Thomas Schwarz, chairman of the state association of North Rhine-Westphalia and general secretary of the party, said that it was “hard to beat in terms of cynicism” when it comes to the fact that “industrial history is to be continued here, and with the slaughtering of animals, life will soon return to the halls move in when it comes to killing ”. In the Rheinische Post, however, Schwarz rowed back: "God knows there are worse conditions in other slaughterhouses."
