The Barbaraviertel is a district in the north of Neuss and is located west of the Neuss harbor . It has 2,903 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2015) on an area of ​​2.50 km².

Infrastructure

District formative and namesake is the Catholic Barbara Church , which was built in 1932 and today the parish of St. Mary belongs.

With employers in the area include not only the oil mill Sels the slaughterhouse Neuss , built in 1903-1905, and the FS-paper mill, FS stands for carton . The site of the cardboard factory was acquired on July 18, 1911 by Karl Schulte and Eduard Deus. The company has belonged to the Mayr-Melnhof Group since 1983 ; 500 people are employed here.

With a proportion of foreigners of 41.4%, the Barbaraviertel is the most international district in Neuss, after the Augustinusviertel (48.6%). In 2009, every fourth inhabitant of the Barbaraviertel over 18 years of age was over-indebted.

In the Barbaraviertel there are six playgrounds, one of which is a skater facility, and an open youth club sponsored by the Catholic Church.

In addition to the all-day primary school Barbaraschule, there is the Haus Sonnenschein family center run by Caritas, the Lebendiges Haus daycare center of the Evangelical Church.

The Theater am Schlachthof has been active as an independent theater since 1994 . The focus is on acting, cabaret, theater for children and young people, as well as numerous socio-cultural projects.

The dance sport community Quirinus , founded in 1986, creates offers in popular and professional sports. The A-team is Latin in the first Bundesliga formations (as of the 2014/15 season).

The quality of the residential area is seriously affected by the noise of Düsseldorfer Straße as a feeder to the A 52 and by industrial facilities such as the Sels oil mill .

The odor pollution from the oil mill in particular regularly leads to complaints from residents. Many attempts and improvements to the exhaust gas cleaning system did not lead to any permanent improvement. The smell of the exhaust gases is so strong that even residents from Düsseldorf complain about pollution.
