Oil mill Sels
The Sels oil mill is a plant in the eastern part of the Barbaraviertel in Neuss , which produces vegetable oils , fats and meal for use as food , biofuels and animal feed . The oil mill was founded in 1890 by the brothers Otto and Ludwig Sels in what was then the rural community of Heerdt as the first company at the Neuss port , today the company is called O. & L. Sels GmbH & Co. KG . The family business is now run by the fourth generation.
The mill can process up to 500,000 tons of oilseeds annually. The mill can process soy and rapeseed. Rapeseed oil and rapeseed meal are currently only produced from rapeseed . Since soy is mainly grown in a genetically modified form - which is not permitted in the EU - soy beans are no longer processed into soy oil . The company employs around 100 people (including the subsidiary Sels Oel + Fett GmbH in Düsseldorf).

In 1890 the company was founded by Otto and Ludwig Sels. From 1923 the oilseeds (in sacks) were delivered by ship to the port on the Rhine . From 1930 the oil drums were delivered in our own vehicles. In 1938 an extraction plant was put into operation to increase the oil yield. From 1944 onwards, the production capacity decreased due to the war damage.
In 1970 a seed silo with a capacity of 25,000 t was built. In 1987 the subsidiary SELS OEL + FETT GMBH & CO. KG for the packaging of containers for wholesalers and retailers. In 1992 the seed silos were expanded to a capacity of 40,000 t.
On August 13, 2000 there was a fire in a production hall.
In 2007 a new toaster-dryer-cooler system was installed and put into operation. In 2009 a new extraction was put into operation. In 2011 six new presses were installed.
In a study commissioned by the city of Neuss in 2004, it was found that the odor nuisance exceeded the specifications of the odor immission guideline NW in the neighboring residential and mixed areas. There was an odor nuisance in 15% of the annual hours, 10% would be permissible. In 2007 Sels invested around 5 million euros in odor control. The measures include the use of biofilters and the burning of odorous exhaust air that is discharged through a chimney .
In 2015, preparations were made for a new extraction on the opposite side of the harbor.
Products
In addition to the filling of trademarks on behalf of customers (. Eg for Metro AG and Rewe ) are oils and fats under the own brand Selsana produced. Container and cardboard packaging for gastronomy and bulk consumers (10l / 10 kg) account for the largest share of sales. In addition to rapeseed oil from our own production, the sunflower oil and palm fat supplied are also packaged by the subsidiary SELS OEL + FETT GmbH . The SELS OEL + FAT GmbH is a member of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) .
