Economy in Neuss
The economy in Neuss has favorable location conditions due to its location on the Rhine and the Neuss harbor .
As a Roman camp, Neuss has a long economic tradition . A settlement of craftsmen and long-distance traders developed in today's center as early as the first century . The granting of the right to mint coins in 1475 underlined the economic importance - also in the entire region - as early as the Middle Ages .
During the French era , the left bank of the Rhine was occupied by French troops and temporarily annexed by France .
From around 1804 Napoleon planned a canal called the Nordkanal between Neuss and Venlo on the Maas ; but only part of it was built to Neersen .
In addition to textile , paper and aluminum production, Neuss is known for its oil mills . From the beginning of the 19th century rapeseed oil and oil were increasingly produced from beets . Two of the once twelve oil mills are still in operation: the Casper Thywissen oil mill and the Sels oil mill . The oil mill of Walter Rau Neusser Öl und Fett AG was shut down in mid-2012 after over a hundred years of operation.
Large areas in the port area and in the south of the city offered and still offer enough space for industry to settle. In 2002 the first German branch of the Dutch retail group Hema opened in the city center.

port
The geographical location of Neuss with its proximity to the Rhine spurred the city's growth early on and in 1835 led to the expansion of a port in the former arms of the Rhine. In August 2003, after long negotiations with the port of Düsseldorf, the port company merged to form “Neuss-Düsseldorfer Häfen GmbH”. The Neusser Hafen maintains the Neuss Railway Company.
European / Germany branches
Due to its proximity to the state capital Düsseldorf and the former capital Bonn, Neuss is popular for branches of foreign companies in Germany and Europe. Due to the high density of Asian - especially Japanese - companies in the Düsseldorf area, many Asian companies founded their agency in Neuss (see also German-Japanese relations ).
