history

Hatschek cement plant at the Altmünster-Gmunden location

In 1894 Ludwig Hatschek bought the rag paper factory Kochmühle in Vöcklabruck. He developed fiber cement products under the brand name Eternit , which he derived from the Latin aeternus , eternal - an asbestos cardboard with Portland cement as a binder . The product combined lightness with impermeability, it was inexpensive and non-flammable. The health hazards posed by asbestos only became known later. At the beginning of the 1990s, the company switched to asbestos-free production.

After the death of the founder Ludwig Hatschek, his son Hans Hatschek succeeded him at the top of the company. During the economic crisis of 1934, the company's workforce was at its lowest with 14 employees. At the end of the Second World War , production came to a standstill for a short time due to a lack of raw materials. In 1947 the workforce was already 345 again.

Since 2009, Eternit Österreich GmbH and FibreCem Deutschland GmbH have been wholly owned by the Swiss entrepreneur Bernhard Alpstaeg and the Swisspearl Group he holds, which is part of the Swisspor group .

Since 2014, the entire facade and roof product range of Eternit Österreich GmbH has been sold on the German market under the name Swisspearl. Auia Germany is a wholly owned subsidiary of Eternit Austria. With effect from May 24, 2016, the legal form was changed from a stock corporation to a limited liability company.

Hans Hatschek and Hatschek Foundation

Hans Hatschek (1890–1956), son of Ludwig Hatschek , not only emerged as an entrepreneur, but also as a patron. Numerous streets in the district as well as the former building of the Vöcklabruck regional hospital that he donated are named after him. While the extension built in 1964/65 was blown up on March 12, 2006 , the so-called "Hatschek Foundation" established by Heinrich Schmid and Hermann Aichinger 1927–1931 remained largely in place as an Open Art and Culture House Vöcklabruck and is used for cultural events and a Used youth center. Hatschek is an honorary citizen of Vöcklabruck.

Products

The product range extends from roof and facade systems to plant pots and interiors. A third of the products are exported.

The company received the state award in 1958 and has been allowed to use the federal coat of arms in business transactions ever since . Eternit Österreich GmbH received the Austria quality mark in March 1996 .
