The SIG Combibloc GmbH , based in Linnich is the German subsidiary of Swiss SIG Combibloc Group AG (formerly SIG Holding AG). This is one of the world's largest manufacturers of beverage cartons and the associated filling machines. After the manufacturer Tetra Pak , the SIG Combibloc Group is in second place.

From Jagenberg via PKL to SIG Combibloc

In 1929, Jagenberg-Werke , Düsseldorf , filed a patent for the Perga pack , which was granted in 1930. This was a wax paper- based milk packaging product for the many small bottling companies of the time. However, the initially successful development came to an abrupt end due to the economic and political crisis in the early 1930s. However, the "Perga pack" from Jagenberg AG came onto the market again from 1950 after the Second World War . In the 1960s, it was the most common packaging of its kind in Western Europe.

In 1958, Jagenberg Werke AG founded Papier- und Kunststoffwerke Linnich GmbH ( PKL for short ) in Linnich in the Düren district due to steadily increasing demand . This is where the packs were made. The production of the filling systems remained at Jagenberg in Düsseldorf . In 1962 PKL introduced the brick-shaped “blocpak” system and the associated filling machines. Inexpensive transport and space-saving storage became more and more important. Therefore, the dimensions of the boxes are based on standardized Euro pallets . The lamination of the cardboard with polyethylene plastic replaces the paraffin seal .

In 1975 PKL presented the “combibloc” packaging system for aseptic filling of beverages, which is still in use today. Starting with milk and juices , soups and sauces with pieces, tomato products, water , wine , pudding , etc. in carton packs from SIG Combibloc were also filled in the mid-1980s . In 1983, PKL established a siding on the Jülich - Linnich railway line and contractually agreed with the German Federal Railroad to transport a certain minimum amount over the railroad every year. Until 2001, raw paper transports from Scandinavia regularly traveled by rail to Linnich, which saved this route from being closed.

PKL GmbH has been operating under the name SIG Combibloc GmbH since 1989 and from 2007 to 2014 belonged to the New Zealand Rank Group via its Swiss parent company. The cardboard packaging is produced in factories at the production sites in Linnich and Wittenberg (Germany), Saalfelden (Austria), Rayong (Thailand), Curitiba (Brazil), Suzhou (China) and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia). The filling machines are built in Linnich and Suzhou. The company currently employs more than 5,000 people in over 40 countries and reported a turnover of 1,721 million euros for 2015.

On November 23, 2014, the SIG Combibloc Group was taken over by the Canadian Onex Corporation . The transition of the company to the new group of companies took place on March 16, 2015.
