Theater am Schlachthof Neuss

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Theater am Schlachthof (TAS) is a free theater in Neuss am Rhein in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is located in the Barbaraviertel and owes its name to the nearby former slaughterhouse in Neuss . The TAS was founded in 1994 and has two stages. The program includes plays from the areas of drama, cabaret, and children's and youth theater. In addition, the theater initiates numerous socio-cultural projects, such as theater education offers for children, young people and senior citizens.

history

"EIGEN-art eV", consisting of theater and culture professionals from the Neuss and Düsseldorf area , was founded as early as 1987 . It sees itself as an open platform for entertaining art and as a promoter of young talent.

In 1994 the association took over the sponsorship of the newly founded Theater am Schlachthof, which it still holds today. The founding chairman was the Neuss cabaret artist Martin Maier-Bode . The TAS was founded with the support of the then Neuss city director and later state secretary for culture of North Rhine-Westphalia, Hans-Heinrich Grosse-Brockhoff, in the premises of a former paint factory with strong voluntary work by the association members. In the early days of the theater, the management and artistic direction were organized by the board of "EIGEN-art eV". From 1995 to 1998 Jürgen Eick, later director of the Ansbach Theater, was the chairman.

In 1999 Reinhard Mlotek took on the position of managing director employed by the association. He increasingly took on artistic decisions. After his unexpected death in 2011, the theater got the new managing director Britta Franken and the artistic director Markus Andrae. The current chairman of "EIGEN-art eV" is the author, director and cabaret artist Jens Spörckmann, who can also be seen regularly on stage at the TAS.

program

TAS has twelve to eighteen premieres from the fields of drama, cabaret, and children's and youth theater on the program per season. The theater currently has around 25,000 spectators annually.

The early years of the TAS were characterized by cabaret ensembles such as “Exekution 27b”, “Cabaret without Ulf”, “Opposum Comedy” or the productions of the “New Tendency Theater”. Today the TAS unites drama and cabaret in its program. It shows mostly self-produced pieces from the fields of musical theater, comedy and drama. Since 2012, the current artistic director, Markus Andrae, has focused on acting. There it was important to him that the pieces had a socially relevant topic, which in the best case was also locally oriented and was happily illuminated in a humorous way so that the content could also reach the cabaret audience. He was able to successfully implement this approach very quickly, an example being the play “Fiese Matenten”, which, with its local reference and historical component, was able to generate many new viewers. Also since 2012 the TAS has had the cabaret ensemble "Rathauskantine", which deals primarily with local political issues. Here political topicality mixes with local references and hit and hits the Neuss nerve. In 2017 the “Rathauskantine” was awarded the Neusser Rekelieser Order. The music theater division was also rebuilt. The new and very successful music theater productions with a small ensemble now tell stories and, like the plays, have a socially relevant topic, e.g. B. 100 years of World War I, resistance movement of the edelweiss pirates, post-war period, 20s / stock market crash. On the stage you can also see readings, self-produced children's theater pieces, pieces from their own youth club and the two senior ensembles. In addition to in-house productions, the TAS also organizes regular guest performances by artists from the German cabaret and comedy scene, such as Martin Maier-Bode , Christian Ehring , Lisa Feller , Jens Neutag, Sabine Wiegand ("alias" Dat Rosi ", the likeable Ruhrpottperle ”) and Harry Heib (“ Heinz Alone ”).

The TAS is also the organizer of STUNK in Neuss and Düsseldorf, the cabaret show at carnival time, in the Neusser Wetthalle and since 2017 in the Capitol Theater in Düsseldorf. Before that, it took place for years at the ZAKK in Düsseldorf . Since 1995, STUNK has combined political satire, live music and cabaret elements in a framework story in over 20 performances every year. In the current ensemble, Sabine Wiegand, Carolin Stähler, Franziska Lehmann, Ilva Melchior, Harry Heib, Dennis Prang, Jens Spörckmann and Jens Kipper are on stage. The authors are Martin Maier-Bode , who also directs, Jens Neutag and Sabine Wiegand. Every year around 9,000 spectators come to Stunk.

In the past few years the TAS has developed steadily and has made a name for itself far beyond Neuss through its project work. Since it opened, it has been working on educational theater offers for children and young people, e.g. B. Theater holiday campaigns and the youth club “Spielstarter”, which offers improvisational theater for young people. In September 2019, the TAS celebrated its 25th anniversary with a ceremony, many special performances and an anniversary brochure.
