Capitol Theater (Düsseldorf)
The Capitol Theater is the largest theater in the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf .
history
In 1994 Rheinbahn AG's tram depot, which is over 100 years old, was converted into a theater by the former TOP magazine publisher Lothar Neuse and opened with the premiere of the Broadway Düsseldorf music show . A year later, producers Thomas Krauth and Michael Brenner took over the theater. In January 1996 they brought the musical Grease onto the stage, which, with a playing time of three years and around 1.2 million visitors, gave Düsseldorf its first place in the ranks of renowned musical cities. In 1999 the house was extensively renovated. The original brick architecture and the character of the former depot were retained.
facts and figures
The Capitol Theater has a large hall (1140 m²) with 1131 seats and a “club” (630 m²) with up to 475 seats (dinner seating: 300 seats, row seating: 475 seats). The foyer with around 1500 m² is divided into a lower and an upper foyer, a winter garden and five bars. In-house productions and guest performances are shown in the Capitol Theater. In addition, numerous well-known companies have used the theater as an event location. Until 2009 the theater was run by the producer Thomas Krauth , who brought the world premieres of the musicals Miami Nights (2002) and Das Mädchen Rosemarie (2004) to the stage as an in-house production. The Musical Dome in Cologne has also been part of the theater group since 1998 and the roller-skating musical Starlight Express in Bochum since 2002 .
In 2009 Thomas Krauth handed over the musical company to the producer Maik Klokow , but remained the owner of the Capitol Theater. Since then, Maik Klokow has been operating under the leadership of the “ Mehr! Entertainment “the Capitol Theater, the Musical Dome and Starlight Express - as well as the Cats theater tent (including Luxembourg, Zurich, Oberhausen), the Musical Theater Bremen and the Admiralspalast in Berlin (since June 15, 2011).
Henning Pillekamp has been running the theater since January 2015.
