Miami Nights is a German musical from 2002. It tells the love story of the American tournament dancer Jimmy Miller and the Cuban popcorn seller Laura. The action takes place in Miami in the 1980s.
overview
Miami Nights is a musical based on the hits of the 1980s and a tribute to the dance films of that decade. The dance musical premiered on March 3, 2002 in Düsseldorf at the Capitol Theater . Accompanied by hits by Madonna , George Michael , Gloria Estefan , Cyndi Lauper and David Bowie , Miami Nights tells the love story between the American tournament dancer Jimmy and the Cuban Laura.
The self-production of the Capitol Theater, which was produced by Thomas Krauth and Andrea Friedrichs, brought the world of the eighties back to life under the direction of Alex Balga and with Natalie Holtom as the choreographer. And with it the theme of “dancing as a way of life”: As a tribute, Miami Nights cites internationally known dance films such as Fame , Flashdance , Footloose or Dirty Dancing .
The production took place in Düsseldorf for almost two years and was seen by around 500,000 visitors. The Dernière took place on January 25, 2004.
Following the Dusseldorf season, the original production of 4 February to 7 March 2004 in the Etablissement Ronacher in Vienna listed
The revival of production started in 2007 . After a guest performance at the Freilichtspiele Tecklenburg from July 27 to September 1, 2007, Miami Nights went on tour as a new production in Germany and Switzerland from November 2007 . The dance musical also returned to Düsseldorf as part of this tour: from December 6, 2007 to January 13, 2008, Miami Nights was performed again in the Capitol Theater.
action
Miami in the eighties: The tournament dancer Jimmy falls out with his dance partner Jessica - and that just before the finale of the Miami Nights Dance Contest! Soon afterwards he meets the Cuban Laura, who takes him into the strange world of salsa rhythms. Neither Jimmy's trainer nor his mother are satisfied with the choice of a new dance partner and try to prevent the two from getting closer by all means. Jimmy's former partner Jessica is also intriguing to destroy the couple's happiness. Because the dance contest is far from over ...
first act
Miami in the eighties: The successful tournament dancer Jimmy Miller and his girlfriend Jessica Diamond win the first round of the "Miami Nights Dance Contest". But already after the first victory frenzy, there is an argument between the two. Jimmy then announces that she no longer wants to dance with Jessica, and Jessica announces that she will only step onto the dance floor with Roy Fire, Jimmy's arch rival.
Jimmy roams Miami furiously. In a salsa bar in the Cuban quarter he meets Laura, who sells popcorn during the day in the Tanzpalast. Here, in the world of passionate salsa rhythms, he sees Laura in a completely new light. He enthusiastically asks her to introduce him to this dance - salsa . Laura's brother Emilio doesn't like this at all: his sister shouldn't dance with an American. And when Jimmy insults Emilio, he gets to know his temperament.
Despite all the difficulties, Jimmy and Laura are united by a love of dance more and more. Meanwhile, Betty (Jimmy's mother) and Mr. Bob (his ambitious dance school trainer) are already looking for a new partner for Jimmy. But he only wants Laura ...
Second act
Mr. Bob dreams of becoming president of the dance sport association. But to do this, Jimmy and Jessica, his model students, have to win the dance contest.
Mr. Bob will do anything to bring them back together. With a trick he got Jessica to believe that she could only win the tournament with Jimmy - and not with Roy Fire. So Jessica only wants one dance partner: Jimmy!
But the next time you dance, everything turns out very differently. Jimmy introduces his new partner: It's the popcorn seller Laura! Mr. Bob and Betty are horrified, to say the least, and even mock the Cuban woman. Injured and disappointed, Laura runs away. Jessica triumphantly pulls Jimmy onto the dance floor. But this breaks free and follows Laura, who seeks consolation from her friends in Emilio's bar. Jimmy tries to explain everything to Laura, but Emilio denies him. A man who performs tricks like a trained dog and calls this dancing is not worthy of his sister. Only when Jimmy can make it clear to him that he too has a feeling for dancing in his heart does Emilio allow them to participate in the tournament together.
The way seems clear for Jimmy and Laura. But Jessica has come up with a new coup: She surprises Jimmy with the "good news" that she is expecting a baby - from him! In this way she wants to force him to dance with her again. Her plan works: When Laura finds out about it, she is deeply hurt. She no longer believes in Jimmy's love or in his assurances that he really only wants to dance with her, Laura. “What is your word still worth?” She asks sadly and never wants to see him again.
But Jimmy risks everything to get Laura back. And already has an idea: According to the motto "Nothing spreads faster than a secret", he tells his friend that Jessica is pregnant. The “secret” spreads rapidly - and Jessica, who is already confident of victory, is undoing her own plan. Angrily, she finally admits that she is not expecting a baby. Now Laura sees that everything was really just a game. Nothing stands in the way of their love for Jimmy, their dance together and a happy ending.
