Release

The first game in the series, Outlast , was released in 2013, after which a sequel for the fall of 2016 was announced shortly afterwards. In 2014 the DLC Outlast: Whistleblower was released for the first Outlast part . Due to development complications, the release date of Outlast 2 has been postponed to the first quarter of 2017 and will be released on April 25, 2017 for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 and Xbox One . At the same time, Outlast Trinity should be released for the consoles , which contains all three Outlast parts. The publisher Warner Bros. Interactive took over the distribution of the shop version, the PC version of Outlast 2 is only available as a download .

In Australia, the game was initially denied the age rating. Outlast 2 only received R18 + approval from the Australian Classification Board with cuts . The German version was released by the USK from the age of 18 and should appear uncut. Developer Red Barrels announced, however, that there should only be one version of Outlast 2 worldwide . With the patch released in March 2018, a story mode was added to the main game, which allows the player to concentrate more on the events of the plot thanks to a reduced level of difficulty. At the same time, according to publisher Red Barrels, the patch also restored game elements that had to be removed from the game at the time of publication in order to avoid the commercially harmful “Adults Only” release.

In March 2018, a version of Outlast 2 was released for the Nintendo Switch .

action

The plot of the game is largely based on the Jonestown massacre in 1978, with the characters being fictitious. Blake Langermann, journalist and cameraman, is trying to solve a mysterious murder case of a pregnant stranger called Jane Doe together with his wife Lynn . To this end, they are in the Supai region, Arizona , in the Sonoran Desert, in search of a heavy industrial complex, when a high concentration of mercury was discovered in the dead woman's blood when a flash of light suddenly appears, causing the helicopter to crash brings. Blake wakes up sometime after dark and finds that Lynn has disappeared. On his search for Lynn, Blake arrives in the village of Temple Gate, where a sect , completely isolated from society, awaits the end of the world. The leader of this sect is Sullivan Knoth, called "Papa" by his followers. Knoth is convinced that the village was built on a portal into hell. There is also a group of apostates under a man named Val, who are called heretics. While the sect tries to fight the anti-Christian and thus prevent the end of the world, the apocalypse , the heretics try to bring about the end of the world.

In the village, Blake has to hide from the residents who want to kill him. In his search for Lynn, he repeatedly found letters and other documents that on the one hand confirm the residents' religious madness, but on the other hand also point to their extreme lust . As the game progresses, Blake learns that the villagers' madness can be traced back to experiments by the Murkoff Corporation. The village is irradiated with microwave radiation from the aforementioned industrial complex via relay antennas in order to test psychological weapons on the residents. After some searching, he finds Lynn, who was kidnapped by the sect. The two flee, but after a short time Lynn doubles over from stomach pain. Blake wants to know what happened to her, but she doesn't want to talk about it. At that moment, the two of them are attacked by the heretics, Blake is knocked out and Lynn is kidnapped again. Some time later, Blake is found by a man named Ethan. Ethan used to be a cult member himself. It turns out that Ethan is the father of the killed Jane Doe and that her real name was Anna Lee. Blake learns from Ethan that Knoth rapes women and, if they become pregnant, has them killed: otherwise they would give birth to the anti-Christian. While Blake is resting, Ethan is killed by Marta, one of Knoth's most loyal supporters and at the same time his executive justice and executioner. Blake flees to the village. In a chapel he meets a heretic who has been captured by the sect. He tells Blake that the heretics are holding Lynn in the mine shafts near the village.

From the beginning of the game, Blake suffers from visions that lead him back to his own youth. The visions and also the intensity of the perception of these increase towards the end of the game, which is due to the constant irradiation of the village. Blake's visions revolve around a school friend Jessica, who allegedly committed suicide after a bloody incident at her school. In an anachronistic narrative style, one learns more from vision to vision about the incidents surrounding Jessica's death. After one of these visions, Blake wakes up in a group of lepers suffering from syphilis who have been expelled from Temple Gate. The group, led by Laird, a dwarfish man, believe they have found their messiah in Blake. They crucify him, then bury him alive and after his resurrection want to eat of his flesh so that they can be freed from their carnal sins. However, Blake manages to escape from the grave. He reaches the mine but is discovered and has to flee. While on the run, he comes across the heretic camp where Lynn is. After another vision, Blake wakes up in the mine to find that the heretics have been overwhelmed by the villagers. He escapes and finds Lynn, who suddenly seems very pregnant. A huge storm breaks out at dawn. Blake and Lynn arrive at the chapel where Lynn gives birth to their child, but at the same time, immediately before she dies, discovers that there is no child there. As it turns out, Lynn wasn't actually pregnant, she was suffering from a psychosomatic pregnancy, also caused by radiation emissions from the Murkoff Corporation. While Blake holds the supposed child in his arms, he passes out. When he wakes up again, he is greeted by Knoth. He claims to have killed all of his followers and recommends Blake kill the child. The fact that both Blake and Knoth see the child even though there is no child there suggests collective delusions. Then Knoth kills himself in front of Blake's eyes. Blake leaves the chapel, sees numerous dead sect members in the village square and has one final vision in which he sees Jessica praying on her knees. Depending on the number of documents collected, choking marks are visible on Jessica's neck.

Gameplay

Outlast 2 is a first-person - survival horror game which, like its predecessor, consists only of a single player campaign. The player controls the protagonist who is unable to fight and you only defend yourself in action sequences.

The only equipment it has is a camera with a night vision function. Compared to the first part, the camera can now take clearer recordings and has an audio recognition system with which distant noises can be located. Another difficulty: if the protagonist loses his glasses, his vision deteriorates.

Reviews

In contrast to the first part, the game received rather mixed reviews. Players in particular were disappointed after the release on reddit .

"Conclusion:» A gripping horror game that, after a great start, loses its impact over time and therefore lags behind Part 1. «"
