The Theater an der Kö is a boulevard theater in Düsseldorf . It is located at Schadowstrasse 11 in the Stadtmitte district and is part of the Schadow-Arkaden shopping center, which was completed in 1994 . Its name refers to the Königsallee shopping boulevard , known as the Kö for short, not far from the theater .

history

Schadow Arkaden

The theater was opened on September 21, 1994 with a ceremony and a speech by the North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Johannes Rau and the play Hamlet , a comedy in two acts by Paul Rudnick . The preliminary decisions for the construction of the 400-seat boulevard theater were made by René Heinersdorff , the current theater director, his parents with theater experience, the Arnold family as co-owners of the Schadow-Arkaden and the project developer Walter Brune shortly after the foundation stone was laid for the shopping center in 1992. The name originally intended of the theater - Theater in den Schadow Arkaden - is said to have been dropped after the current name was suggested by the British actor Peter Ustinov , to whom Heinersdorff had reported on his theater plans in Berlin, with the following remark: “Schadow Arkaden? Are they doing Indian shadow plays there? Why don't you call it 'an der Kö'? Everybody knows the Kö. I never go to the Kö with my wife and the credit card together. ” Since the theater opened, many well-known actors have appeared on the stage. The theater also attracted attention when the actors Martin Semmelrogge and Karsten Speck were obliged to serve a prison sentence in addition to their play .
