The Theater der Klänge is a music and dance theater that was founded on May 10, 1987 in Düsseldorf . This theater sees itself as an ensemble collective of various artists who create together. The two founding members Jörg Udo Lensing ( composer and director ) and Jacqueline Fischer (dancer and choreographer ) have been working together in almost all productions since 1987.

Story and concept

Jörg U. Lensing is the artistic director of this theater and as such has directed and partly choreographed almost all productions . Since 1987 - shortly after the ensemble was founded - the composer Thomas Neuhaus has been involved, who, in addition to some instrumental theater music , is mainly involved in productions of the Theater der Klänge when it comes to the integration of electronic music . This has been happening increasingly in interactive form since 2001 and connects intermedia with interactive video installations as a scenographic concept for a reactive stage environment, provided primarily for dancer-performers acting in this sensorized space.

The artistic path of the Theater of Sounds is characterized by three main lines:

  1. The preoccupation with prototypical characters , reinforced by the profound integration of masks in the productions " The mechanical ballet ", " The baroque mask stage ", " November ", "Talking is silver ...", " LUDUS DANIELIS ", " The birds ", " Die Neuberin ”and“ TRIAS-The Triadic Ballet ”.
  2. The preoccupation with musical theater text in the productions “ Die Küche ”, “ November ”, “Reden ist Silber…”, “ LUDUS DANIELIS ”, “ Die Vögel ”, “ Die Neuberin ”, “Megalopolis”, “ Gregorius ” and “Johnnys Jihad” ".
  3. Interactive intermediality and dance in the productions "Figur und Klang im Raum", "Megalopolis", " Modul | a | t | o | r ", "PCI", "HOEReographien", "SUITE intermediale", " VANITAS " and " CODA "

In 2007 the theater's only production so far that was not directed by Jörg U. Lensing was created: “I am someone else” by Jacqueline Fischer. This production, like the 1999 production “The Sacrifice”, are exceptions in the work of the Theater der Klänge, as they both dealt with current contemporary approaches in dance theater with Jacqueline Fischer and with “physical theater” with Jörg U. Lensing.

The stage approaches of the Bauhaus ( Oskar Schlemmer , Kurt Schmidt, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy ) influenced the theater of sounds just as strongly as the engagement with the commedia dell'arte and with Asian dance and mask theater forms. The Theater der Klänge currently sees itself as part of a discourse on composed contemporary music theater, such as intermediality as a scenographic form.

In addition to the stage creations, the THEATER DER KLÄNGE has so far published two music CDs, three audio books, two picture books and a feature film (DVD: Gregorius). In 2012/13 there was a six-month solo exhibition on "25 years THEATER OF SOUNDS" in the theater museum of the city of Düsseldorf .
