The Halimedusidae are a family of the hydrozoa (Hydrozoa) from the tribe of the cnidarians (Cnidaria) living exclusively in the sea . It is a small family of currently three species in three monotypical genera .

features

The life cycle of the members of the family has a polyp and a medusa stage . The hydroid polyps are very small (<0.2 mm) and solitary . They have three to eight (usually four) wreaths with capitate tentacles. A few stinging cells are irregularly distributed on these . The Medusa buds are single just below the tentacles. The medusa usually has a short gastric stalk and distinct interradial tips in the jelly above the manubrium . The manubrium is cruciform with perradial lobes at the base. The lipped mouth is square to cross-shaped. The lips are covered with nettle cells. There are four radial channels. The edge is covered with four perradial tentacles, in some forms there are also four interradial groups of tentacles. The tentacles are hollow at the base. The gonads sit on the manubrium and in some forms also on the perradial lobes. There are no mesenteries. On the edge sit cylindrical buds and abaxial ocelli .

Geographical occurrence

The three species occur in the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the waters around Antarctica.

Systematics

Currently, only three monotypic genera are included in the Halimedusidae family:
