Hambone Willie Newbern

Hambone Willie Newbern (sometimes misspelled "Newborn"; * probably 1899 , † probably 1947 ) was an American blues musician.

Little is known about Newbern's life. He left a total of six recordings, all made in a single session in 1929, including the first recording of the classic Roll and Tumble Blues .

Newbern became known in the Brownsville , Tennessee area, where he often performed with Yank Rachell . Sleepy John Estes was his student - most of the information about Newbern comes from him.

Quick-tempered, Hambone Willie Newbern spent some time in jail. He is said to have died in a brawl around 1947.
