Hamilton House (Prestonpans)
Hamilton House , also Magdalens' House , is a mansion in the Scottish town of Prestonpans in the East Lothian Council Area . In 1971 the building was included in the Scottish List of Monuments in the highest category A.
history
The mansion was built by Laird John Hamilton , brother of Thomas Hamilton, 1st Earl of Haddington . Hamilton had the house built in 1628 to replace the 15th century Preston Tower . Originally the building had an L-shaped floor plan, but it was expanded to a U-shape. In 1805 the manor house was used as a barracks. It has been owned by the National Trust for Scotland since 1937 and has been restored.

Hamilton House is located at the confluence of the West Loan and Preston Road in the south of Prestonpans. The masonry of the one-story mansion is plastered and whitewashed with Harl , whereby the partially profiled bezels are left out. A tower with a square floor plan and a pyramid roof emerges in the right interior corner on the west-facing front . This is where the two-winged entrance portal is located with a profiled edging and a final cornice . The door is crowned by an ornamented triangular gable with a coat of arms. Another triangular gable with the inscription "Praised be the Lord My Strength and My Redeemer" surrounded by an index finger, cherubim and a thistle crowns the window above. A bay cantilevered into the left interior corner . Two hatches are arranged symmetrically between the two towers .
The gable surfaces of the three hatches on the south side are designed with coats of arms and the initials IH (John Hamilton) and KS (Katherine Simpson). The rear entrance closes with a round arch . The roofs are covered with gray slate. The final gables are stepped gables . The built-in windows are predominantly twelve-part lattice windows .
