Course of the Hammergraben in Rösrath-Hoffnungsthal

The Hammergraben is an approx. 2 km long moat in Rösrath-Hoffnungsthal .

course

At the beginning of the trench, the water was diverted from the Sülz by means of a weir and returned to the Sülz behind the hammer mill. A reservoir in front of the hammer mill guaranteed that there was always sufficient water. The lake is still there today. The trench is otherwise mostly dry. In the lower course it is still supplied with water by the Rothenbach.

use

The water once supplied a hammer mill that was called "Hope Thaler Hammer" and came into the possession of the Reusch family of manufacturers in 1816. The right to draw water from the Sülz ended for the Reusch heirs in 1999. In 2004 the Sülzwehr was sealed. Since then, only rainwater has collected in the upper section of the trench. Residents complained about odor nuisance.
