Hana yori dango ( Japanese 花 よ り 団 子 , dt. "Better dumplings than flowers") is a Japanese proverb . It means something like “the practical comes before the aesthetic”.

With a slightly ironic aftertaste, it sums up the reality of the simple classes, which cannot afford the high aesthetic ideals of the higher classes.

In Butō , the proverb was taken up in a Berlin production under the title “Hana mo dango mo” ( Both Bread and Beauty ).
