The island of Hanfwerder is the largest island in the Lieps , a lake in the urban area of Neubrandenburg . Its current size is approximately 20,000 m². It lies between the east bank of the Lieps and the Bacherswall . The center of the island consists of a partially submerged eyrie . Years of archaeological investigations made it possible to establish that it was here in the 11th – 13th centuries. Century there was an oval Slavic island castle. It was connected to the Nonnenhof peninsula and the east bank of the Lieps by two wooden bridges. On the eastern bank there was a settlement belonging to the castle. Not far away was a larger body grave field that also dates from the time of the Inselburg. It can be assumed that the members of the nobility from the castle were buried here. Rich grave goods allow this assumption. During the investigations on the island, which were led by the archaeologist Volker Schmidt from 1974 , the former eastern gate entrance and the rampart system of the castle were exposed. The wall therefore consisted of a wooden structure about one meter wide, on the inner wall of which the Slavic residential buildings were immediately attached. In addition, eight spurs were recovered, which it can be proven that they were only worn by nobles. Today the island is forested and overgrown in summer. There is nothing to be seen here of a former castle.

There are no written records about the complex, but it is assumed that all Slavic buildings in the Lieps belonged to the legendary Rethra .
