Hangikjöt

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Traditional Icelandic food - lamb's head as a hangikjöt at the bottom of the left plate

Hangikjöt (pronounced Haun-gi-kjöt) is smoked Icelandic lamb. Literally translated it means hanging meat because it hangs for a long time in the Eldhús, the kitchen house. In the old days it was a holiday or Christmas dinner. This is how “Ketkrókur”, one of the Icelandic Christmas journeymans, gets his share.

Unlike some other traditional Icelandic dishes, Hangikjöt on Flatbrauð , for example, is a delicious meal for many non-Icelandic people too.
