Hanielgarage

The Haniel garage at Grafenberger Allee 258 in Düsseldorf was built for Franz Haniel by 1953 according to plans by Paul Schneider-Esleben . It was one of the first multi-storey car parks with an associated motel built in Germany after the Second World War .

Both the construction and parked cars can be seen from the outside in the storey-high ribbon windows running all around. A reinforced concrete floor frame on which the ramps are suspended protrudes five meters above the steel glass facade. The ramps are straight up the long sides of the building.

The facility was renovated in 1994 and converted into a car dealership (BMW) in 1998, after a car repair shop (Fiat) had been operating in the premises since 1953.

“The connection between a hotel and a multi-storey car park was probably created in anticipation of a development comparable to that in the USA. The garage is not only interesting because of this socio-cultural pioneering position, it also occupies an outstanding position in terms of architectural history. "
