Hanns Günther

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hanns Günther , actually Walter de Haas (born Walter Siede ) (* 1886 ; † 1969 ), was a German author , translator and editor of popular science books.

Life

Walter Siede was already using the author's name Hanns Günther in 1911 . Because of a criminal record and to avoid being drafted into the military, he emigrated to Switzerland and took the name de Haas . He settled in Zurich and continued to write under his pseudonym Hanns Günther .

In 1912 he began to publish electrotechnical introductions in Franckh'schen Verlagshandlung and the popular science Kosmos series. His books are still regarded today as a reference for the connection between accuracy and comprehensibility.

His book In a Hundred Years - The Future Energy Supply of the World, which was published in 1931 by the Society of Friends of Nature , is still regarded as important today . In this book he propagated geothermal power plants with regard to the finiteness of coal reserves (this type already existed in Italy at that time) and the types of power plant, updraft power plant , wave power plant and tidal power plant , which had not been realized anywhere until then .

His work Das Buch von der Eisenbahn (The Book of the Railroad) from 1927 is also sought because the rail technology that was current at the time still fascinates rail enthusiasts interested in history today. The book covers all topics, from basic physics to the technology of vehicles, rail routes and signals to railway structures and questions relating to the timetable.
