Max Oettli (born January 28, 1879 in Wigoltingen ; † December 5, 1965 in Steckborn ) was a Swiss educator .

family

He was the son of Johann Heinrich Oettli and Mathilde Oettli, née Zollikofer. His father was the head of the Kalchrain forced labor facility and administrator of Altenklingen Castle . His half-brother was the much older Protestant theologian Samuel Oettli (1846–1911). In December 1905 Max Oettli married Natalie "Tata" Kirpichnikova from Kharkiv . The couple had six children, one of whom was Marie-Louise "Mascha" Oettli (1908–1997). In 1930 the couple divorced.

education

Max Oettli studied natural sciences at the Eidgenössisches Polytechnikum in Zurich and received the subject teacher diploma in 1902. At the University of Zurich he did his doctorate on the ecology of the rock flora of the Alpstein.

Professional development

From 1902 to 1921 Oettli worked as a natural history teacher at the Glarisegg Rural Educational Home . He encouraged students to carry out scientific experiments themselves in class and published a book on this in 1919 entitled Das Forscherbuch . He was a member of the youth literature commission of the Swiss Teachers' Association.

In the spring of 1921 the family moved to Vers-chez-les-Blanc near Lausanne. Max Oettli took over the management of the Swiss Central Office for Combating Alcoholism in Lausanne until 1947 . He founded the office of the Association for the Education of Tobacco Dangers and was in charge of the Anti-Alcohol Association.

In the meantime, however, also documented that Max Oettli as a teacher of biology and chemistry at least 1928 to 1931 educational reform boarding school school by the sea of Martin Luserke on the North Sea island of Juist has worked.
