Samuel Oettli

Samuel Oettli (* 29. July 1846 in St. Gallen , † 23. September 1911 in the mental hospital Illenau in Achern ) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman and university teachers .

Life

Samuel Oettli was the son of Johann Heinrich Oettli and his wife Wilhelmine (née Schmid), the father of the house of the Langhalde Evangelical Educational Institution in Abtwil ; his half-brother was the educator Max Oettli .

He enrolled at the University of Basel and continued his theology studies at the University of Zurich and the University of Göttingen .

In 1872 he became a pastor in Roggwil , but then resigned in protest against the ban on the apostolic creed and then worked as a pastor in Wangen .

In 1878 he was appointed associate professor for the Old Testament at the theological faculty of the University of Bern; In 1880 he became a full professor and in 1895 moved to the University of Greifswald ; In 1900 he led the deanery of the local theological faculty there. At the University of Bern he was, together with Adolf Schlatter, an important representative of the pietistic-conservative underrepresented direction.

Together with Hermann Cremer , Otto Zöckler , Viktor Schultze and initially Adolf Schlatter he belonged to the so-called Greifswald School, which consistently represented a positive attitude towards the Bible as God's word.

In 1906 he received his doctorate from the University of Greifswald.

On July 18, 1908, he was appointed secret consistorial advisor; in the same year he became seriously ill and was continuously ill until his death.

Samuel Oettli married Anna, daughter of Johann Diethelm, in 1875.
