Hans-Jürg Sommer (* 1950 ) is a musician and composer from north-western Switzerland.

He comes from a working-class family and completed an apprenticeship as a decorator. In 1978 he completed his training as a guitar teacher at the Biel Conservatory . In 1979 he began to learn to play the alphorn in self-study . Since it was difficult to get scores for the alphorn, Hans-Jürg Sommer decided to compose and write down melodies for the alphorn himself. About half a year later he performed his own composition at the yodelling festival and reached class 1.

Over 500 melodies were created in his work. Today he is probably the most played alphorn composer. The Schweizer Landesfonotek lists over 116 recordings in which he either participates or compositions by him are played.

Hans-Jürg Sommer was awarded the Golden Treble Clef in 2002 for his musical merits . In 2006 the Canton of Solothurn awarded him the Music Prize in recognition of his cultural achievement.
