Hans H. Scheld (born August 9, 1946 in Ehringshausen / Lahn-Dill-Kreis ) is a German cardiac surgeon , researcher, university professor and former director of the clinic and polyclinic for thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery at the University Hospital of Münster .

Career

Scheld is married and has two children. He graduated from high school in Dillenburg in 1966 and then studied medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. In 1973 he passed the state examination in Giessen and obtained his doctorate at the same time. med. The license to practice medicine was granted in 1974 by the State Medical Association of Hesse. Scheld received his general surgical training from Karl Vossschulte and Konrad Schwemmle in Gießen and was recognized as a specialist in surgery in 1980. Scheld completed his apprenticeship with Fritz Hehrlein in cardiovascular surgery with special consideration of premature babies and newborns as well as toddlers, where he became senior physician in 1984 and completed his habilitation in the same year with a thesis on myocardial protection. Cardiac surgery stations at heart centers around the world followed. He established his main research focus, the transplantation of heart and lungs, in Gießen in 1987, and in 1988 he achieved the first successful infant heart transplant in Europe. In 1989 Scheld was appointed university professor (C3) for life at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. A year later, he accepted the chair in Münster and was appointed director of the local clinic and polyclinic for thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. Until his retirement in 2011, he held this position continuously. During this time the heart and lung surgery and the surgery of the vessels near the heart expanded. With a special focus he developed complex heart surgery in infants, toddlers and adults, introduced transplant surgery for thoracic organs and implemented the implantation of artificial hearts and mechanical support systems. The surgical treatment of cardiac tumors developed into a focus of particular expertise through his driving force. Around 60,000 interventions in the entire specialist area were carried out under his leadership.

He emerged as the author and co-author of over 1000 scientific publications, was co-editor of several journals and a member of cardiac medical societies. During his time, the Münster Heart Clinic was supported by the German Research Foundation. Significant results have been recognized by scientific prizes. These research activities also led to 130 dissertations and 25 habilitations. He personally trained 28 young surgeons to become specialists in cardiac surgery and cardiac surgical intensive care medicine. In 2003, Scheld was elected President of the German Cardiac Surgeons, an office he held until 2005.

After his retirement in 2011, he became Senior Professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.

In 2016, he was appointed honorary member of the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery.
