Hans Helmer

Hans Helmer (* 1901 ; † 1969 in Saarbrücken ) was a German sports official. From 1945 he was President of 1. FC Saarbrücken and later also President of the Saar Sports Association.

Life

After the Second World War, the members of the FCS were looking for a president who had no Nazi past. Between 1942/43, Helmer was in the Neue Bremm camp on the border between Germany and France.

Although he knew little about football, he took over the office to rebuild the club. The strength of the entrepreneur who owned a distribution company was the ability to lead people. In 1952 he led the FCS to the final of the German championship. The club has never achieved that again since then.

The Saar was French again since 1945, that the football club played in the French 2nd division and was champion of this division in the first year. In a conversation in Paris with the President of French Football Jacques Helminger, a qualifying game was set as an obstacle before the FCS could advance. In Paris, the team won against Stade francais-Red Star 7: 1. Then the FFF (Féderation francaise de football) decided not to let Saarbrücken move up to the first division in order to "have no half-Germans as French champions". After long negotiations, the Haut Commissaire of France, Gilbert Grandval, then accepted to let the team play in Germany.
