Harstena is an archipelago island in Sweden and also an excursion destination. It is located in the municipality of Valdemarsvik in the historic province of Östergötland .
The island was first settled in 1543 when fishermen settled on the islands to hunt seals . In 1921 a school was built on Harstena, in 1930 the island got a telephone connection and in 1945 it was electrified. The seals have been under species protection since 1965 and are no longer allowed to be caught.
Today very few people live on Harstena all year round. Some have a small summer house where they spend the summer. The island is now an interesting destination, where you can also visit a museum about the history of the island.
