The Tano South Municipal District is a district in Ghana . It is located in the center of Ghana in the Ahafo region . It borders on the districts of Tano North in the Ahafo region and on the districts of Offinso , Ahafo Ano South and Ahafo Ano North in the Ashanti region . Chief Executive of the district with the capital Bechem and 61,693 inhabitants is Osei Sekyere Bota .

The Tano South District was only formed by a presidential decree of November 12, 2003 in 2004 through division. The former Tano District was divided into Tano South and Tano North .

geography

On the total area of ​​1,500 km² the district is overgrown with dense forest on 322.52 km². Two forest protection areas have been established here: the Bosomkese Forest Reserve and the Apaape Reserve. Bushfires are a major problem in the district, as slash and burn remains a traditional farming method in the district. Fires are also used as game barriers during driven hunts, some of which get out of control.

The district rises between 270 and 760 meters. With the exception of a few hills, however, the district is between 270 and 360 meters above sea level. Important rivers are Bisi , Srani and Mankrang .

Since the Tano South District is one of the youngest in Ghanas, there are insufficient data on the part of the former Tano District, which is now called Tano South. In 2006, estimates for the Tano South District were 61,693 people.

Only in Bechem with 12,591 inhabitants in 2006, Techimatia (12,261 2006) and Derma (7,236 / 2006) can be described as urban settlements. Other larger localities are Dwomo ( 3.108 / 2006), New Brosankro (2.019 / 2006), Breme (1.579 / 2006), Mansin ( 1.422 / 2006) and Ankaase (1.342 / 2006).

Various traditional shrines can be found in the district such as Taa Dwomo in Dwomo, Daa in Derma and Ahwintakum in Bechem.

economy

The economy in Tano South is largely shaped by agriculture, in which 64 percent of the employees work. 16 percent of employees work in trade, 14 percent in the service sector and 6 percent in industry. The trade and with it the number of economically active employees in this sector have risen sharply since larger market centers were established in Bechem, Techimantia and Derma. The expansion of the road network and the improvement of the telecommunications offer have also had a positive impact on trade in the district.

64 percent of all employees work in agriculture. Of these, 52 percent are men and 48 percent women. Mainly corn , cassava , plantains , yam , tomatoes , okra and pepper are grown. But export goods such as coffee , cashews , cocoa and palm oil are also produced.

education

There are 68 kindergartens, 90 elementary schools, and 43 junior secondary schools in the district . Two senior secondary schools and a technical college are also available. A total of 440 teachers are employed in all schools and educational institutions.

Between 2004, the year the district was founded, and 2006 there was an 8.6 percent increase in educational institutions. In particular, the number of kindergartens rose by 12.1 percent, the facilities of the junior secondary school rose by 10.9 percent.

Constituencies

A constituency of the same name has been set up in the Tano North district. Here Andrews Adjei-Yeboah won the seat in the Ghanaian parliament for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the general elections in 2004.
