Hashioki ( Japanese 箸 置 き 'chopstick holder' ) is a traditional part of Japanese tableware. Hashioki are used to place chopsticks on it. This prevents the table or its support from getting dirty or the chopsticks from rolling off the table.

A similar tableware in western food culture is the knife rest .

Manufacturing

The pads for the chopsticks are made from a wide variety of materials: wood , clay , glass or more noble materials such as jade .

Origami can be used to make a makeshift Hashioki from the paper packaging of disposable chopsticks .

use

Today, Hashioki are mostly used on formal occasions in Japan. The Hashioki is on the front left side of the table setting , the chopsticks are placed on it with the tips to the left, parallel to the edge of the table.
