The Hatlapa Uetersener Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. KG (proper name: HATLAPA) was a German manufacturer of ship and marine engineering, as well as a mechanical engineer based in Uetersen . The company developed, manufactured and sold marine accessories such as winches and steering gear. After several changes of ownership, the company had to file for bankruptcy in 2019.

history

The engineer Max Hatlapa founded the company in 1919. Initially he built small diesel locomotives, but soon also winches, compressors and generators for the shipbuilding industry. Max Hatlapa died in 1939. His wife Johanna Hatlapa took over management of the company during the war years. When her son Hans-Heinrich Hatlapa came home from captivity after the war, he took over the company. At first only locomotives were built because shipbuilding in Germany had been severely restricted by the Allies. When these regulations were relaxed in 1952, Hatlapa returned to the production of maritime products. Hans-Heinrich Hatlapa died in 2009. The company passed to his son Hubertus.

As a result of the global financial crisis that began in 2007 , there was a crisis in maritime shipping from 2008 , which also affected Hatlapa as a major supplier of new builds and conversions. Sales and earnings collapsed and the workforce had to be reduced. At the end of 2011, sales were EUR 118 million.

On November 1, 2013, the Finnish Cargotec group took over Hatlapa. The company initially traded as MacGregor Hatlapa GmbH & Co. KG and was part of Cargotec's marine equipment division, which operates under MacGregor . In 2014, after the takeover, MacGregor Hatlapa's sales were 88 million euros. At the end of 2017, sales were 100 million euros. In 2019 the company filed for bankruptcy. As part of the bankruptcy proceedings, there were legal battles over the payment of severance payments to former employees, which MacGregor had promised.

The Kaltenkirchen- based Rother Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH took over parts of Hatlapa from the bankruptcy estate and renamed it Uetersener Zerspanungstechnik und Vorrichtungsbau GmbH , which, however, also had to go into bankruptcy in early 2020.
