Hawqala as Arabic calligraphy

The Hauqala ( Arabic الحوقلة, DMG Ḥauqala ) is the religious phrase used by Muslimsلا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله / lā ḥawla wa-lā qūwata illā bi-llāh or translated: There is neither power nor strength as with God . This saying, which is not documented in the Koran but only in the Hadith , is used by Muslims when an accident hits them or when one is in a hopeless situation, but also to commemorate God. This expression is often entered at the end of religious works or on the colophon of manuscripts.

The word Ḥauqala is a contraction from the words ḥaul (= power) and qūwa (= strength) and Allāh. In Arabic, such contractions are called Naḥt .
